The Tree of Hope Campaign is proud to announce the appointment of Ms. Joannie Benoit and Mr. Denis Larocque as Co-Chairs of the 2017 Campaign.

Singer and musician Joannie Benoit has already been involved in the Tree of Hope as a Treekeeper. Over the years, she has participated in many of the Campaign’s activities.

“When I was 16 years old, I found out I had cancer of the femur with lung metastasis. It was a rare type of cancer—the same one Terry Fox bravely battled. It is hard to describe how that kind of news derails your life, especially when you are 16 years old. Soon after I started treatment, doctors told me I needed surgery on my leg. In the end, they had to amputate my left leg.”

Now that she has recovered and her career is in full swing, Ms. Benoit wants to give back to those who supported her and those facing similar challenges.

“Thankfully, today, I am well. In addition to pursuing my passion for music, I want to give back to those who have supported me. I want to give back to all the medical professionals who saved my life and who helped me get through such a difficult time. I would also like to give hope to those currently battling cancer. Finally, I want to tell the young people who receive the same kind of news I did when I was a teen that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that even if the fight can be hard, it’s one worth fighting!”

Joannie Benoit will lead the 2017 Campaign alongside Mr. Denis Larocque. Mr. Larocque is the President and CEO of Major Drilling International Inc. Originally from Lamèque, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Assumption Life, the Board of Crossroads for Women in Moncton, and of the Rotary Club of Moncton and Dieppe. He is also a member of the CHU Dumont Foundation Board of Directors.

“It’s a cause that is very near and dear to my heart,” explains Denis Larocque. “Everyone knows someone who is fighting or who has fought cancer. In committing to this cause as Co-Chair, I hope to contribute actively to improving care offered to cancer patients. We are extremely lucky to have the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre, the Mgr.-Henri-Cormier Lodge and the satellite units in the North. It will be an honour for me to support our health professionals, patients and their families by making this small contribution to the Tree of Hope Campaign.”

“We are honoured that Denis and Joannie have accepted our invitation,” says Claude Paré, Vice President of the Provincial Tree of Hope Cabinet. “Our new Co-Chairs have been very engaged in their community despite their busy schedules. They bring valuable knowledge of their respective fields, as well as a strong dedication to the cause. We are thrilled to welcome them to the Tree of Hope family.”

Jacques B. LeBlanc is President and CEO of the CHU Dumont Foundation. He applauds the appointment of Ms. Benoit and Mr. Larocque.

“We’re so happy to welcome Joannie and Denis as Co-Chairs of the Tree of Hope Campaign. Joannie has shown time and time again how committed she is to the cause. For his part, Denis has built a reputation as a great Acadian leader in the business world, and we are thrilled that he has agreed to support us in the Tree of Hope Campaign. This campaign has a positive impact on patients all over New Brunswick, and we are convinced that as leaders of the campaign, Joannie and Denis will help us achieve our objectives.”

Since 1989, the Tree of Hope Campaign has raised more than 24 million dollars. Donations help improve the comfort and quality of care offered to cancer patients right here in New Brunswick. Funds raised are used to fund projects at the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre, the Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge, the satellite units in the North as well as to support cancer research efforts.
