New Brunswickers have once again shown their support for the Tree of Hope Campaign by raising a total of $1,619,743. The amount was presented at the end of Radio-Canada’s Tree of Hope Radiothon, the high-point of the annual campaign.

The exciting radio event was hosted by Martine Blanchard and Janic Godin. It was broadcast live from the CCNB Dieppe from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., on ICI Radio-Canada Première. CBC radio hosts Jonna Brewer and Vanessa Blanch launched the radiothon, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., on CBC Radio One.

“Throughout the day, we heard testimonies of hope, courage and determination,” says Tree of Hope Campaign Co-Chair Denis Larocque. “Indeed, we raised a lot of money thanks to our volunteers, our donors and our partners. Let us also remember that those who are fighting the disease and the professionals who care for them have received a clear message today: they are not alone in this fight. They have the people of New Brunswick behind them. And, we have had the proof during this 29th Tree of Hope Campaign!”

Joannie Benoit is a cancer survivor and Co-Chair of the Tree of Hope Campaign. She also experienced strong emotions.

"It's fantastic! Words cannot express the gratitude I feel towards the generosity of the public! Throughout the day, we heard touching testimonies from patients, survivors, health care professionals, donors and volunteers. Many artists came here today and told us that they were here to support us. All those who came to the Dieppe CCNB today have one thing in common: they believe in the cause. They hope that by joining our efforts we can do more to fight cancer. We have proven again today that we are stronger together!”

For Ms. Colette Francoeur, Regional Director of ICI Acadie, the radiothon is an activity that brings people together. "We cannot remain indifferent to such an outpour of generosity and to all the work being done in the communities to fight the disease. Therefore, ICI Acadie’s extended family is proud to be associated with the Tree of Hope. I salute the members of our team who rose to the challenge once again to make this a memorable day of radio. And I warmly congratulate all those who have contributed to the success of the campaign. »

Jacques B. LeBlanc is President and CEO of the CHU Dumont Foundation.

“This has been another incredible moment! On behalf of the patients and the medical staff, I sincerely thank all those who contributed to the Tree of Hope Campaign, either by donating money or by offering their time to support the cause. The campaign is a success because it rests on solid foundations in many New Brunswick communities. The reason is simple. It benefits patients from all over the province. With the funds raised, we will be able to continue to improve the quality of care provided to cancer patients.”

Donations to the 29th Tree of Hope Campaign will be invested in improving care provided at the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre and at the satellite units in Northern New Brunswick. Funds will also be used to continue research against cancer and to improve the comfort of patients who stay free-of-charge at the Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge in Moncton.

The following are among this year’s priority projects:
  • Purchasing the necessary equipment to perform the Mohs surgery technique to treat some skin cancers.
  • Implementing Dynamic Adaptive Radiation Therapy to better target affected tissues and reduce the dose administered to healthy tissues.
  • Purchasing Vein Viewers to help better identify puncture sits and to avoid associated complications.
  • Purchasing new specialized treatment chairs to improve the comfort of patients and provide improved ergonomics to staff.
  • Purchasing a Fletcher applicator that is used for CT scans and MRIs. It is mostly used for cervical cancer.
  • Various improvement and maintenance projects at the Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge.
