Moncton, November 29th, 2019 – The Tree of Hope campaign has met its objective. It raised a total of $2,229,106.

Hundreds of people gathered today at the CCNB-Dieppe for the Tree of Hope radiothon. This is the high point of the campaign. The exciting radio event was hosted by Anne-Marie Parenteau and Janic Godin. It was broadcast live from the CCNB in Dieppe from 9 am to 7 pm, on ICI Radio-Canada Première. CBC radio host Jonna Brewer launched the radiothon on CBC Radio One from 6 am to 9 am.

All day long, we were able to pay tribute to the many volunteers. They work hard all year round to raise funds for the Tree of Hope campaign. We were also able to learn more about the progress made in the fight against cancer. We heard testimonies from many people affected by the disease. Of course, the radiothon included performances by many artists from the region.

Nine people had agreed to co-chair this year’s campaign. Nine people who have lent their names, their faces and their energy to this cause over the past 30 years. They are: Gilles Beaulieu (founder of the Tree of Hope), Denis Losier, Dr. Nicole LeBlanc, Martin Latulippe, Monique Poirier, Luc LeBlanc, Robert Maillet, Joannie Benoit and Denis Larocque. The campaign was conducted under the theme Tree of Hope – Ready for the Challenge!

One of the activities that largely contributed to the success of the campaign this year was the Shears for Hope Challenge. This activity created a phenomenal hype in the community, as 44 personalities from across the province agreed to shave their head or undergo a significant cut, by raising donations from their immediate entourage.

"Throughout the day, we heard testimonies filled with hope, courage and determination," said Nadine Martin. She is the Director of the Dumont Foundation, the umbrella organization for the Tree of Hope campaign. "I would like to thank our nine co-chairs, as well as the hundreds of volunteers who have joined our team. They have worked hard over the past several months to achieve this year's goal of  $2 million. This certainly calls for a celebration. But I think that, above all, we must remember the people who are fighting the disease and the professionals who care for them. They are the real winners of the 2019 Tree of Hope campaign!"

Ms. Colette Francoeur is the Director General of ICI Acadie. She sees the radiothon as an example of an engaging partnership that is very important for the community. "I salute the members of our team who rose to the challenge again this year to make the 30th edition of the radiothon a memorable day of radio. Over the years, we have witnessed the growth of the Tree of Hope campaign. It has established roots in the community. And, we are very proud to contribute to this collective effort."

The money raised through this year's campaign will be used to improve the care provided at the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre and in the various units of the departments at the Dumont University Hospital that provide services along the continuum of care for cancer patients. The funds will also be used to continue cancer research efforts and to improve the comfort of patients who stay free-of-charge at the Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge in Moncton.

The following are among this year’s priority projects:

  • The purchase of an orthovoltage device. This is a device to improve the treatment of skin cancer.
  • The implementation of brachytherapy for the treatment of advanced gynecologic cancers.
  • The replacement of the CT-SIM unit for the purpose of modernizing the equipment.
  • The introduction of liquid biopsy technology. This is a molecular genetic process to assess the efficiency of lung cancer treatments.
  • The acquisition of an Equicare Patient Portal. This module enables the various stakeholders to share patient information in real time within the Vitalité Health Network.

Since it started in 1989, the Tree of Hope campaign has raised over $30 million. Donations have been invested directly to improve the quality of care for New Brunswick cancer patients. Each year, many volunteers from all over New Brunswick organize events to raise funds for the Tree of Hope campaign. The funds are donated during Radio-Canada’s Tree of Hope radiothon.
